ABOUT MARLYN

Marlyn paints in acrylic and does ink drawings. He has always loved art and painted since kindergarten. Marlyn received his Master of Fine Arts at Drake University in 1992. He also earned three certificates from the Art Institute of Chicago based on studies of Old Masters’ techniques, and he was involved in the Portrait Society of America for continued learning in painting techniques.

Marlyn exhibited in many Iowa juried shows that included the “Community of the Artist” in Ames, “Iowa Exhibited” at the Heritage Gallery in Des Moines, and the State Fair. He was represented by Gallery 319 in Ames. Some of his commissions included a life-sized fiberglass hog, which he painted with scenes of Iowa soybean fields. This was part of the collection of the National Pork Board. He also was commissioned by the Iowa Soybean Association to paint a giant fiberglass soybean encircled by a painting of soybean fields representing the four seasons.

Marlyn particularly enjoys painting Iowa landscapes, because Iowa is his home state. He paints from memory. His Iowa paintings often show a lot of sky, because the sky is such an important part of the Iowa landscape. He also enjoys doing ink drawings of naturalistic and abstract subjects.

Later in his career, Marlyn studied the Zentangle Method, a meditative way to draw structured patterns.
