ABOUT JANEL
Janel Garza (b. 1987) is an Arizona-based artist whose work explores harmony, balance, and interconnectedness through abstract geometric compositions. Although she initially pursued studies in environmental science and Western herbalism, her fascination with living systems, patterns, and relationships ultimately found its fullest expression through visual art.
After relocating to downtown Phoenix in 2012, Garza immersed herself in the city's vibrant arts community and began building a multidisciplinary practice driven by curiosity and experimentation. Working across painting, sculpture, textiles, public art, and installation, she follows each new idea wherever it leads while maintaining a distinctive visual language rooted in geometry, rhythm, and the dialogue between structure and organic form.
A pivotal moment in her career came in 2018 when she was commissioned to create a mural for the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). The project introduced her to a deeply site-responsive approach to public art, reinforcing her interest in creating work that responds to its environment rather than simply occupying it. Since then, her murals and public art projects have appeared throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area in museums, parks, businesses, private residences, and corporate spaces, including Facebook's Phoenix offices.
Whether creating an intimate painting or a large-scale installation, Garza approaches each project as an exploration of relationships—between people and place, material and meaning, the natural world and the built environment, and ultimately between the artwork and the viewer. Her practice invites moments of reflection, encouraging audiences to slow down, notice patterns, and experience a sense of connection within an increasingly fragmented world.
